Bat Guano Harmful to Brick?

Postby mjanetaylor » Thu Apr 02, 2009 10:52 am

We have hung two bathouses on my neighbor's old brick stables building, but he is worried that the guano might be harmful to the brick ... Does anyone know whether bat guano will erode masonry? If so, is there anything we can do to protect the brick?

Thanks,
Jane

No guano doesn't harm brick at all. Urine however will occasionally stain the brick after drying and crystallizing. It is usually washed off by a windy rainstorm. If it doesn't, just wash it off with a hose preferably after the bats leave for hibernation. :grommit:

I agree with Joe. Guano has no effect on brick. My bat house is on a brick building and is used by more than 150 bats. Sometimes a few droppings stick to the bricks but after some rain there is no sign of droppings or urine.
