I was having a discussion with a friend after I had helped get a bat out of her house. She says that bats can only fly if they drop from a height but not if they are on the ground they can not fly, is that true?

Bats prefer to drop slightly prior to sustained flight however, bats can and do fly from a horizontal surface. Bats that I have caught in large nets have flown when I placed them on the ground during a release.
