Well, here's a day in the life of a crazy Australian bat box builder. I'm on my third design now. The problem I found is my small single volume compartment , when filled with bats, can cause the opening to block up with guano. So the idea is to create a design that is easy to build, fast to make, kid friendly(kids make them at schools) and of course suitable for the bats. That means self-cleaning. As you can show via the photos I've simplified the whole process. Gave the old brains a shake and started thinking...
Another problem with our location is during Summer the boxes can overheat quickly. Now by sheer luck I stumbled on these guys. http://www.batguys.com/ Now, gave the brains another shake and decided to try the "venting the bats trick" as in the batguys website. So back to the Mark 3 design, or jez is it mark 4??? Anyhow, I decided to add vents to the rear of the box. Might solve the heat problem. Now, I'm seen regularly at the local church these days praying that the bats will take to these awesome homes. Maybe my prayers will get answered...
Enjoy,
Joe.
