Another new bat house

Postby cloudman75 » Wed Oct 06, 2010 8:52 pm

I have begun construction of another 3 chamber bathouse for 2011 season. This one will be about 30 inches high and 16 inches wide. I have not decided on how much ventilation yet, but would like it to be used as a maternity colony house.
I already have a new summer house, and an existing winter house. I will install the 2011 season houses together on a hollow wood post similar to Terry Lobdell's design.
This new house will have rough cedar board baffles, no screening or scratching. My bat residents have all left except for about 25.
They do not appear to be flying out at dark as I took a photo last night of them in the bat house. They are using my winter house painted darker and no ventilation holes. They may be in topor, I don't know. There are few insects flying now. Anyone else still have bats? Update. finished second house for 2011 today. Will paint all pine before installing. Cedar will be unpainted. Oct. 9, 2010

Frank, the bats here have not been too active due to very cold weather.......most of the little browns have left......I have not looked much the last couple weeks due to working a lot of hours.......

I might try and watch a little closer this fall to see how late my big browns roost in the bat houses.........the latest I've ever seen was Nov. 28th.

Larger particles do not adequately penetrate the wood cell walls. It is claimed by the proponents of micronized copper products that the copper nano particles which escape the wood will bond readily with organic matter and become biologically inactive.

I may not understand your post, but I never use treated pine. I use white pine and paint it with 3 coats of exterior latex where exposed to the weather. I don't paint baffles, leave them unpainted natural.Image
